Make a colour PDF grey or black and white before you print it. Choose grey or black and white and save the new file. Nothing is uploaded. Save ink when you print and make files smaller by turning colour pages grey, or pure black and white for scanned text.

How to make a PDF black and white

Drop your PDF in the box, choose Grey or Black and white, and press Make grayscale. Pages become pictures, so the text can no longer be selected.

Common mistakes

  • Using this on a PDF you need to search or copy text from: the text becomes part of the picture.
  • Opening a PDF with a password: remove the password first, the tool cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The pages are drawn in grey in your browser and the new PDF is saved to your device.
Grey or black and white?
Grey keeps shades, good for photos. Black and white uses only black and white, good for plain text pages and the smallest print cost.
Can I still select the text?
No. Every page becomes a picture, so the text is part of the picture. Keep your original if you need the text.
What does the black and white level do?
Anything darker than the level turns black and anything lighter turns white. Raise it to get more black, lower it to get more white.
Can I still select the text afterwards?
No. Each page is turned into a grey picture, so the text becomes part of the picture and cannot be selected or searched.
