Free Online Compress PDF

Make a big PDF smaller so it is easy to email or upload. Choose how strong the squeezing should be and see how much space you saved. Your file stays on your device. Use it when a PDF is too big to email or to upload to a form. It shows the size before and after, so you know what you saved.

How to make a PDF smaller

Drop your PDF in the box, choose a level and press Compress PDF. The result shows the size before and after. "Light" keeps your text; "Balanced" and "Strong" save more space by turning each page into a picture.

Common mistakes

  • Using Balanced or Strong on a PDF you need to search or copy text from: the text becomes part of the picture.
  • Opening a PDF with a password: remove the password first, the tool cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The pages are drawn and packed again in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.
Which level should I pick?
"Light" keeps your text and only packs the file better, so it saves a little. "Balanced" and "Strong" turn every page into a picture, which makes the file much smaller but means you can no longer select or search the text.
Why did my file not get smaller?
Some files are already as small as they can be. When the new file would be bigger, the tool keeps your original and tells you.
What do the custom settings mean?
Resolution is how sharp each page picture is (150 is fine for reading on a screen, 300 for printing). Quality is how much each picture is squeezed: lower is smaller and blurrier.
Why is the new PDF sometimes not smaller?
Some PDFs are already packed as tightly as they can be. When the new file would be bigger, the tool keeps your original and says so instead of giving you a worse file.
