Free Online Word and Character Counter

Paste or type your text and see the counts update at once, with reading time, the words you use most, and bars that show how close you are to common limits. It gives developers a quick browser-based way to solve a focused word & character counter task before moving the result into a project.

How to count words and characters

Type or paste your text. Words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and lines appear on the right, together with reading and speaking time.

Limits

The bars show your character count against an X post (280), a LinkedIn post (3,000), a meta title (60), a meta description (155), an Instagram caption (2,200) and an SMS (160, or 70 when the text contains non-English characters).

Common mistakes

  • Search engines cut titles and descriptions by pixel width, so a text under the limit can still be shortened.
  • An SMS with one non-GSM character (such as Hindi text or an emoji) drops from 160 to 70 characters per message.

Frequently asked questions

How are characters counted?
As the characters you see: an emoji or a letter with an accent counts as one, even when it is stored as several code units. "Without spaces" ignores spaces, tabs and line breaks.
How is reading time worked out?
Reading time assumes 200 words a minute and speaking time 130 words a minute, which are common averages. People vary, so treat them as an estimate.
Does it work for Hindi and other languages?
Yes. Words are split at spaces, which suits Hindi and most languages. Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, count each run of text as one word.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser as you type.
How do I use this word & character counter tool?
Use the interactive controls above; processing stays in your browser and the result is intended as a practical starting point for development work.
