Common mistakes

Printing a barcode too small or in a light colour: scanners need dark bars on a light background with a clear margin.
Making up an EAN-13 number for a product you sell: real product numbers are issued by GS1 and must be registered.

Frequently asked questions

What is the check digit?

The last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 codes is calculated from the others so scanners can spot a misread. Enter the number without it and the tool adds it, or enter the full number and it is checked.

Which format should I use?

Use EAN-13 for products sold in most of the world (including India) and UPC-A for North America. Use Code 128 for inventory labels and shipping, because it holds any text.

Will it scan?

Print at least 2.5 cm wide on a white background with dark bars and keep the quiet space around the code. Always test a printed label with a scanner.

Is my data uploaded?
