Free Online SRT to VTT and VTT to SRT Converter

Turn subtitle files from SRT into WebVTT, or from WebVTT into SRT, for your video player or website. Paste the text or open the file, move the timing if needed, and download. Nothing is uploaded. Change subtitles between SRT and WebVTT, the two common caption formats. The tool detects the format, can shift all the times earlier or later, and keeps or removes style tags.

How to convert subtitles

Paste your subtitles or open a .srt or .vtt file. The tool shows which kind it found. Optionally move all the timing by some seconds, choose what to do with tags, and press Convert.

Honest limits: every time needs minutes, seconds and exactly three digits of milliseconds (for example 00:01:02,500). Positions and styles written in a WebVTT file cannot be kept in SRT. Files are read as UTF-8 text, up to 5,000,000 characters.

Common mistakes

  • Using a comma in a WebVTT time (it needs a dot) or a dot in an SRT time (it needs a comma): this tool fixes that for you.
  • A subtitle block with no time line: the error names the line so you can fix it.
  • Shifting by minutes: the shift is in seconds, so 1 minute is 60.

Frequently asked questions

Are my subtitles uploaded?
No. The text is converted inside your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
How does it know which way to convert?
A WebVTT file always starts with the word WEBVTT, so a file that starts that way is turned into SRT. Any other file is read as SRT and turned into WebVTT.
What does the time shift do?
It moves every subtitle later (a positive number of seconds) or earlier (a negative number). Use it when the subtitles are always a little behind or ahead of the video, for example 2.5 or -1.2. A subtitle that would end up before 00:00:00 is left out and you are told.
What happens to bold, italic and colours?
"Keep bold, italic and underline" keeps the simple tags for those three. Everything else (colours, fonts, speaker names, positions) is removed because the other format cannot hold it. "Remove all tags" leaves plain text only.
Why do some letters look wrong?
The file is read as UTF-8, the usual text format today. A subtitle file saved in an older code page may show wrong letters; open it in a text editor and save it as UTF-8 first.
Why do web video players need VTT?
The HTML video element reads WebVTT captions but not SRT. Convert your SRT file to VTT to use it with a track element.
