MIME Types List and Accept Attribute Builder

Search a file extension to get its MIME type. Tick the types you want and copy the accept value for an upload field. It gives developers a quick browser-based way to solve a focused mime type lookup task before moving the result into a project.

How to find a MIME type

Type an extension such as pdf, or part of a type such as image, in the search box. Use the buttons to filter by group.

How to build an accept value

Tick the extensions you want in the table. You can also type your own, such as image/*. The finished HTML appears below.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting accept for security: users can pick any file. Check the type and size on the server.
  • Listing only the MIME type for Office files: some systems report them differently, so add the extensions too.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MIME type?
A label such as image/png or application/pdf that tells a browser or server what kind of file something is. It is sent in the Content-Type header and used by the accept attribute.
How does the accept attribute work?
It lists the file kinds a file picker should offer: extensions (.pdf), exact types (image/png) or groups (image/*). It is a convenience, not security: always check the file again on the server.
Why is .js text/javascript?
The standard now names text/javascript as the JavaScript type. application/javascript still works but is the obsolete name.
What type should I use for an unknown file?
application/octet-stream, which means "binary data". Browsers will usually offer to download it.
How do I use this mime type lookup tool?
Use the interactive controls above; processing stays in your browser and the result is intended as a practical starting point for development work.
