Free Online Base85 / Ascii85
Base85 packs binary data into text about 25 percent smaller than Base64. Pick the variant, then encode or decode. It gives developers a quick browser-based way to solve a focused base85 / ascii85 task before moving the result into a project.
How to use Base85 / Ascii85
Paste your code in the box on the left, or open a file, then press Convert. Choose Encode or Decode and a variant. For binary data, use hex as the input or output format.
Common mistakes
- Decoding with the wrong variant: the character sets differ, so the result is wrong or rejected.
- Forgetting that Ascii85 text may be wrapped in <~ and ~>: the markers are removed for you.
Frequently asked questions
How is Base85 different from Base64?
Base85 uses 85 characters and turns 4 bytes into 5 characters, so the text is 25 percent bigger than the data instead of 33 percent.
What is Z85?
Z85 is a variant by ZeroMQ that avoids quotes and backslashes, so it can sit inside source code and JSON. It needs a length that is a multiple of 4 bytes.
What is RFC 1924?
An April 1996 document proposing Base85 for IPv6 addresses. It uses a different character set.
Is my code uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing you paste is sent to a server.
How do I use this base85 / ascii85 tool?
Use the interactive controls above; processing stays in your browser and the result is intended as a practical starting point for development work.
