Common mistakes
- Pasting a Bech32 address (bc1…): it is not Base58.
- Using 0, O, I or l: they are not in the alphabet.
Frequently asked questions
Why Base58?
It leaves out 0, O, I and l, which look alike, and the + and / of Base64, so the text is easy to read and copy.
What is Base58Check?
A version byte, the data and a 4-byte checksum (the start of a double SHA-256) are encoded together. The checksum catches typos.
Does this check that a Bitcoin address has funds or exists?
No. It only checks that the text is well formed and the checksum is right.
Is my code uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing you paste is sent to a server.
