Free Online Zlib Deflate / Inflate

Inflate data from a log, a cookie, a database or a network capture without guessing the format. The tool tries zlib, gzip and raw deflate for you. It gives developers a quick browser-based way to solve a focused zlib deflate / inflate task before moving the result into a project.

How to use Zlib Deflate / Inflate

Choose Inflate and paste Base64 or hex, or open a file. To compress, choose Deflate, a format and a level.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting the data with extra text around it: paste only the Base64 or hex.
  • Expecting readable text from compressed binary data: the result may be bytes, shown as hex.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between zlib, gzip and raw deflate?
All three use the same deflate compression. zlib adds a 2-byte header and a checksum, gzip adds a larger header with a file name and a CRC, and raw deflate has no wrapper at all.
How is the format detected?
gzip starts with 1F 8B and zlib starts with 78 (78 01, 78 5E, 78 9C or 78 DA). If neither matches, raw deflate is tried.
What do the levels mean?
0 stores the data without compressing. 1 is fastest, 9 gives the smallest result and takes longest.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser and nothing you paste or open is sent to a server.
How do I use this zlib deflate / inflate tool?
Use the interactive controls above; processing stays in your browser and the result is intended as a practical starting point for development work.
