How to use Basic Auth Header Generator

Choose "Make a header", enter the username and password and copy the header. Choose "Read a header" to turn Authorization: Basic … back into the username and password.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a colon in the username: Basic authentication cannot represent it.
  • Pasting only part of the header: paste the whole Authorization line or just the Base64 text after "Basic".

Frequently asked questions

What is Basic authentication?
The username and password are joined with a colon, turned into Base64 and sent in the Authorization header after the word Basic. Many APIs, routers and web servers use it.
Is Base64 a safe way to hide a password?
No. Base64 is only a way of writing text and anyone can reverse it. Use Basic authentication only over HTTPS, and prefer tokens where you can.
Can a username contain a colon?
No. The first colon separates the username from the password, so a username with a colon cannot be read back. The password may contain colons.
Is my password uploaded?
No. The header is made in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
How do I use this basic auth header generator tool?
Use the interactive controls above; processing stays in your browser and the result is intended as a practical starting point for development work.
