Free Online Argon2 Hash Generator and Checker

Make an Argon2 hash with settings recommended by OWASP, check a password against an Argon2 hash, or read the settings stored inside one. It shows how long your settings take. It gives developers a quick browser-based way to solve a focused argon2id generator task before moving the result into a project.

How to make an Argon2 hash

Choose Make a hash, type the password, pick a preset and press the button. Leave the salt empty for a random one.

How to check or read a hash

Use Check a password with a password and a hash that starts with $argon2, or Read a hash to see the memory, passes and lanes it was made with.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing settings your server cannot afford under load: test the time on the real machine.
  • Reusing one fixed salt for every user. A fresh random salt is made for you; only set one to reproduce a test vector.

Frequently asked questions

Which Argon2 variant should I use?
Argon2id. It resists both side-channel and GPU attacks and is what OWASP recommends. Argon2i and Argon2d exist for special cases.
What settings are safe?
OWASP lists equal-strength choices, all with one lane: 47 MiB with 1 pass, 19 MiB with 2 passes, 12 MiB with 3, 9 MiB with 4 or 7 MiB with 5. More memory and passes are slower for an attacker, and for you.
What is inside an Argon2 hash string?
The variant, version, memory (m, in KiB), passes (t), lanes (p), the salt and the hash, so a check only needs the password and the string. Use "Read a hash" to see them.
Why is the memory limited to 256 MiB?
The work happens inside your browser tab, which can run out of memory for bigger values. Server software can use more.
How do I use this argon2id generator tool?
Use the interactive controls above; processing stays in your browser and the result is intended as a practical starting point for development work.
